Hairy Arms, Painting Ducks, and Design Decisions

Convincing someone else of design decisions is difficult. It can be so difficult, in fact, that we’ll do almost anything to make sure that we don’t have to make changes we disagree with. But from simple psychology to outright deception, not all tactics are created equal. We need to find ways to be persuasive with stakeholders without using trickery. Actually, the same approaches we champion with users of our products are also helpful in our meetings about design. Learn how to manage the conversation through effective techniques that will help others agree with our choices while maintaining the integrity of the user experience.

Who this is for

This talk is for anyone who needs to talk about design! While most attendees will be designers, many developers, product owners, researchers, and business people also benefit from the ideas and best practices. Regardless of your role in the design process, everyone needs to be better at articulating design decisions.

Our Speaker

Tom Greever is the author of Articulating Design Decisions from O’Reilly Media and UX Director at Bitovi, a front-end design and development consulting company. As a consultant, he helps companies design and build better applications. As a teacher, he helps designers be better communicators. As a father, he helps his children expend energy on wrestling and cleaning up the house. He works from home in Illinois with his wife and five kids.

All registration activities are handled by our volunteers. Please be advised that on the day of the event, we will do our best to manage transfers and late requests, but our primary focus will be on day-of-event logistics.

Regular registration closes at 5pm ET on Thursday, January 18 -or- whenever seating capacity is reached, whichever occurs first. Tickets can be transferred by sending a request to up until 48 hours before the event opening. Transfer requests received after this period may not be received or processed. Transferees will please bring the transferrer's registration confirmation in printed or digital form as backup.

If the event sells out early, a Wait List may be set up and managed by us on a discretionary basis. We will do our best to keep Wait-Listers informed about the status of available seating, but Wait Listers who haven't heard anything by noon the day of the event can assume there has been no change in status.
